North sea herring stocks have recovered from a precarious position in the 1970's when it was overfished. A long term management plan (involving the EU, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway and Russia) yielded positive results in terms of first recovering and replenishing herring stocks and then later ensuring that this stock is maintained at healthy levels and exploited sustainably.
