Starting School
How can knowing about fish and eating fish help you and your children as they start school for the first time?
The national Curriculum for 3-5 year olds has a number of elements which can be enhanced by a greater knowledge of the world around them and issues of environmentalism.
They may do projects at school on different environmental themes but a general awareness of what is happening to the seas and fish stocks can be used to apply some basic ideas and start them thinking about the world. It can also stimulate discussion and lead to them coming up with solutions to problems which will enhance communication and problem solving skills.
Specifically children in the first few years of school are required to develop "Knowledge and Understanding of the World".
Food is a really good way to introduce ideas about the world to them - for example finding out where something comes from can be a way of introducing the subject of globalisation, it can also help a child understand that there are environmental issues to be considered even when they eat a simple meal but also it can introduce them to the wonderful variety and exciting differences of cultures, places and wildlife.
If you look at our Trace Your Fish Section you will find plenty of information about the fish your child is eating and also some of the issues surrounding it. And we are planning on developing more games and art projects for the children to do which will make the issues clearer and easier for them to understand. Please Watch this Space!
